This week our tours were graced with multiple Humpback whale sightings! On Saturday, multiple whales were spotted, putting on a spectacular breaching displays and tail slapping that excited both passengers and crew. What a sight! Wednesday was another exciting tour, with a Humpback whale spotted cruising around near the bluff, before heading towards West Island.

What a treat! This week we spotted our very first Southern Right Whale of the season! An early start to this year and hopefully a sign of what’s to come….

Some more early luck! Over the past two days, our Southern Ocean Adventure tour has been lucky enough to see not one, but two Humpack whales! They were spotted cruising around with a pod of common dolphins.

While it is not yet the official start of whale season, early whale sightings are a promising signs this year’s season will be a good one! Over the past weekend, we were lucky enough to have an early sighting of a humpback whale. It cruised about the Southern ocean waters and interacting with the local dolphin pod, creating much excitement about the months to come.
Unfortunately, our beloved mother and calf southern right whale pair, Shamrock and Paddy, haven’t been spotted since the 18th of August. It seems they have most likely begun their long voyage back to Antarctica for the warmer months.
While it’s unlikely we’ll see any more southern right whales this season, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a chance to spot some humpback whales as they pass through on their journey from the northern parts of Australia.
Shamrock and Paddy were back for only a day. Special treat for our Sunday cruise passengers!
Paddy treated us with an amazing breaching display!
Unfortunately it looks like Shamrock is preparing Paddy for the long journey back to Antarctica and sightings are becoming less frequent.
It is true… there were no whale sightings this week on our cruises.
It seems Shamrock & Paddy have moved along the coast preparing their journey back to Antarctica. Fingers crossed this weekend our luck will change, and we will spot either a Southern Right or Humpback Whale.

Here's your whale update for the week: Sightings have become a bit trickier as Shamrock and her calf, Paddy, prepare for their long journey back to Antarctica. Shamrock needs to move up and down the coast to help strengthen Paddy’s swimming abilities, which unfortunately makes it challenging for us to locate them during our tours.
We’re still offering Southern Ocean Adventure cruises, where we do our absolute best to show you the majestic Southern right whales. However, please remember that these are wild animals, and we can't control their day-to-day whereabouts.

10/8/24 - Shamrock & Paddy at Middleton (2pm cruise)

12/8/24 - No sightings

Latest sightings on our Tours:
3rd August - 11am cruise saw Shamrock and her calf breaching, before they headed off to Waitpinga beach.
4th August - 2pm tour witness a beautiful humpback breaching off of West Island.
5th August both tours got to see Shamrock and her calf returning back to Encounter Bay!
Two Humpback Whales spotted on Wednesday 31st July on the 150th Dolphin Watch Survey!
What an amazing sighting! We also had 1 more humpback spotted cruising through Encounter Bay heading west to the Humpback Highway.
Of course Shamrock and her calf were spotted on the Southern Ocean Adventure.
On Tuesday 23rd July, our 11am cruise was lucky enough to spot Shamrock and her calf.
Saturday’s stormy conditions unfortunately left us having to cancel our tours…
However Sunday was absolutely spectacular with whale sightings on both 11am & 2pm cruises. Mum and calf were putting on a show for our passengers!
On Friday locals spotted the first Mother and calf duo for the season!
Encounter Bay Whales (Facebook page) confirmed the mother is Shamrock! Records with the Encounter Bay Right Whale Study (EBRWS) show Shamrock previously calved in Encounter Bay in 2013 and 2018.
Tours on Sunday got to visit Shamrock and her calf, as well as our afternoon cruise spotting an additional 2 Southern Right Whales.
Great start to the week!
Monday our crew had a quick glimpse of a Humpback passing Seal Island.
Tuesday a Humpback put on an amazing display breaching next to the vessel along Granite Island!
Wednesday we had not 1 but 3 Southern Right Whales sightings next to West Island on both Southern Ocean Adventure cruises!
Fingers crossed this will continue on to the weekend!
Yesterday was an incredible day out on the water - beautiful winter day, sun shining and Whales galore. We operated 3x tours out in the water for Wednesday 3rd July and managed to spot 6x individual Whales throughout the day.

Passengers & Crew were stoked to get an amazing acrobatic display from the whales seen onboard & we are anticipating a great season ahead.
While still very early in the season! We are still eagerly awaiting ‘Southern Right Whales’ to arrive & establish a regular routine in Encounter Bay! Sightings so far are still quite sporadic…
We have had our first and second Southern Right Whale sighting today! Our 11am Southern Ocean Adventure cruise saw not one but two whales at Depledge beach. From the skipper ‘lots water spouts, pectoral fins & spy hopping’!
Only 20 minutes into the Southern Ocean Adventure cruise, a humpback whale was sighted 500m away.

What an amazing weekend! Reports from the SA whale centre said Encounter Bay had sightings of Humpback Whales and Southern Right Whales.
Our lucky team spotted two humpback whales passing through shark alley while on our monthly Dolphin Watch Survey. Big thank you to Sophie one of their volunteers who was able to capture these amazing photos!
We also had sightings of a Humpback and Southern Right Whale on our Southern Ocean Adventure on Sunday!
Yes, you have heard correctly! Southern Right Whales have arrived in the Encounter Bay region. We still haven’t spotted any on our tours but fingers crossed for everyone travelling this weekend, hopefully you will get to spot a few whales!
