Humpback spotted on tour

Passengers were lucky to see a Humpback Whale on this mornings tour (8th July 2020) and we have been fortunate to also see Southern Right Whales on several of our tours (Sunday 5th & Monday 6th) - So it has been a great start to the ‘Whale Season’ and it feels so good to be back on the water operating tours post Covid lock-downs…….

The Ducks Spotter Plane

During the Whale season we use our own plane to spot the Humpback and Southern Right Whales. This enables us to have a better chance of Whale sightings and is also safer. For those who wish to do Whale watching from the shore all our sightings are reported to the SA Whale Centre at the same time our skipper on the Duck is notified.

Humpback caught in rope

On Saturday 14th on our Southern Ocean adventure tour we came across a Humpback which was tangled in rope, this was reported in real time to Marine Parks to mobilize a rescue operation. Unfortunately the Whale has not been seen since despite ourselves and others attempting to locate the Whale using aircraft. Over the weekend we are still sighting both Mother and Calf SRW pairs in the Port Elliot/Middleton area.

We sent the plane up yesterday to spot the whales along the coast, 3 pairs were spotted with adult males close nearby.  One pair was seen playing in the brackish water flowing from the mouth.  Today we have a mother and calf at Boettcher Rd, another great day for photos.

27 August - Whales breaching on the Fleurieu Peninsula Coast

Our crew member Rupert took this fantastic shot on his phone of a whale breach while out on the Big Duck Boat today.  The whales were mainly concentrated around Miami Pde, Middleton to Basham Beach today.  3 sets of cows and calves.  

22 August - Whales Whales Whales

Whales along the entire coast today, a bunch near Granite Island and the Causeway, more over closer to the Victor Harbor Yacht Club, a lone whales by Pullen Island and 3  Mother and calves at Bashams Beach.  Great news for all avid whale watchers.  Today's photo was an entry in todays Whale Comp by Claire Rees, taken today at 2:30

August 20 Best day of the season to date

There are 8 whales in the Encounter Bay Marine Sanctuary today, 3 hovering around the Granite Island region with a further 5 off of the rocks at Middleton (2 mother and calf pairs).  Photo below from Psycs Pix yesterday: (entry in this weeks whale competition)

July 11 - 7 Whales today spotted on the Big Duck

What a great day for whale watching, we spotted 7 whales today, 2 Southern Right whales at Bashams Beach and 5 Humpbacks at Yilkie.  Our intreped photographer friend @psycs_pix took this great shot of one of the Sourhern Right Whales at Bashams Beach.

30 June, 1 July - Great weekend of whales

Numerous sightings were made throughout the weekend, on water most of our action was around the West Island area, from the land traveling Humpbacks and Southern Right whales were spotted from Waitpinga to Goolwa lookout.  The first calf is now suckling in the Encounter Bay Whale Sanctuary.  Below is a picture by Maddie of a whale in the lee area of Granite Island.

Keen spotter and great photographer @psycs_pix has spotted a whale blowing at Middleton Bay (the rocky end) blowing and having a great old time in the winter waters,  Get down for a look.

24 June, Humpback Whale Sighted - Beautiful White underside

On the 24th of June avid photographer @psycs_pix grabbed an amazing photo of the underside of a Humpback Whale tale emerging from Freemans Knob near Port Elliot.
